acceptable parameters in horizontal finishing cut levels

I have a model in which z0 is at the bottom of the workpiece, but I am finishing a sloping surface with a ball end mill. In order to cut all the way to the bottom edge of the surface, I need the end mill to go to negative z but I get an error "please enter a number" when I try to enter a negative number. What is the trick to enter a negatve number?
