User Defined Mill & Engraving Tools

Post by GreggT »

Is anyone using the "User Defined Tool File"? If so would you be willing to share a *.mrg file with me that would be used in this aplication.

Also, How is everybody defining engraving tools. I keep getting "Invalid Tool Definition" in the taper mill dialog when I try to define mine?

Thanks in advance.

To generate you own tool
– open a new VisualMill session
- choose for example top view
- Draw you tool – only the half part starting from 0,0,0
- Join or chain to have only one polyline for the tool section
- Export regions
- Use this file in tool definitions and check by simulating a simple operation i.e. profiling.
Here is a simple – (not real) tool definition drawn i VisualMill in mrg format

VERSION 2.0

0.000000,11.000000,0.000000
REGION END,0.000000
REGION END

I put a small value in Diameter box and smaller value (less then ½ diameter) to the little radius and can use the taperMill tool in engraving.

The same, if you want to make a Chamfer, take a tapertool in angle (most 45 degrees)and set radius from 0 to small amount (0.01mm)
set depth in parameters and stock negativ (-0.5mm) for a 0,5x45°
chamfer.

Well, to be sure, you can take some accurate measurments of your cutting (engraving) tool and redraw it in Rhino. Then you can measure the angle properly. Just input the figures from Rhino into the tool description dialog. Remember to set the radius to 0.

I use engraving tools regularly for cutting in wax, and not just engraving, full finishing toolpaths instead of roughing first. Ain't wax great... :)
