Fast computation of detail toolpaths on large models

Post by KeithRumley »

For those of you who've waited 20min or so for a small region of a large model to be cut, the following may help.

I've found that by manipulating the stock model, 'cleanup' paths on models can be calculated much faster. This, IMO, due to toolpath creation being tied to the stock model.

Instead of using a bounding box stock or similar large stock for cleanup on corner regions, or smaller areas, create 'stock from regions' using the cleanup/smaller regions desired. In my experience, computation speed can be increased at times by an order of magnitude on small regions of complicated parts.

The concept helps cut time with other types of stock related toolpath generation, too.

HTH,

Keith

Fast computation of detail toolpaths on large models

I find this to be the point also,

for example we machine a variety of 3d models/parts
on a 4th axis V/mill

if the model requires matl: 6" thick (Z6")
I set the stock at 3.2 in height, then set stock/start at Z-.2 and the calculation for stock roughing works on the 3.2" thickness
and not all the way through the part if I set stock to 6" Z-3.".

NB:
the Z-.2 is so roughing tool will clear to Z0.0plane as I
usually leave 0.2 stock roughing.
